USM

Focused on translating USM’s (global modular furniture brand) modular philosophy into a digital experience in the US by creating a system that supports both ready-made products and highly configurable solutions.

Challenges

USM’s entry into the US market introduced a key challenge: translating a highly modular product system into a clear and intuitive digital experience. While the Haller system offers flexibility and customization, it can be complex for users unfamiliar with modular design.

The experience needed to balance two distinct user needs—those seeking ready-made products and those interested in building custom solutions.

Design Approaches

Structured the experience around clarity and flexibility —created distinct but connected pathways for ready-made and modular products.

The information architecture was designed to simplify complexity, guiding users from inspiration to product understanding and, eventually, configuration. Modular components and consistent patterns were introduced to support scalability, while content and layout decisions focused on communicating the value of customization without overwhelming the user.

Impact

The redesign transformed a complex modular system into a more approachable digital experience. Represented in over 40 countries and included in the permanent collections of MoMA and the Cooper Hewitt Smithsonian Design Museum, USM required a scalable platform that balanced configurability, usability, and timeless design.
